On 8 April 2019 Professor Shahram Akbarzadeh hosted the panel on ‘After Christchurch: The relationship between hate speech violence and political discourse’ at Alfred Deakin Institute, Deakin University.

Experts on the panel questioned the relationship between hate speech and acts of terror, and the role of political leaders in setting standards of respectful discourse.  Prof Michele Grossman, Dr Matteo Vergani, Lydia Khalil and Hass Dellal (moderator) argued for careful attention to the impact of words.
